The 7th International Conference for EBHC teachers and developers was held during October 28-31 in beautiful Taormina, Sicily. This year’s conference aimed to promote an evidence-based approach to healthcare to increase value and reduce waste. With 7 keynote lectures, 9 workshops and theme groups, 41 oral presentations, and 12 posters, the Conference highlighted the key role of Evidence-based Health Care to address five outstanding challenges for the sustainability of health services:
- Variation in utilization of health care services that cannot be explained by variation in patient illness or patient preferences
- Patient harm from overdiagnosis and overtreatment
- Inequity from underuse of high value health services by certain social groups
- Failure to prevent diseases
- Waste, anything that does not add value to the outcome for patients
The conference had an extensive scientific programme including keynote addresses from Trisha Greenhalgh, Sir Muir Gray, Paul Glasziou, Per Vandvik, Rod Jackson, Brian Alper, and Nino Cartabellotta. Workshops were held on statistics, decision aids, better value healthcare, MAGIC, GATE, and implementation theory. Theme groups were held on evidence-based research, patient engagement, and the Chain network. As always, the Sicilian setting with sun (and rain!), sea and exquisite cuisine added to the success of the conference.
Save the date for the next conference: 8th EBHC International Conference. Taormina, 25th – 28th October 2017.
The first joint conference of the International Society for Evidence Based Health Care (ISEHC) and the International Shared Decision Making (ISDM) group, in Sydney, Australia, is off to a smashing start. Over 300 delegates from more than 25 countries are attending. Follow the conference via Twitter #ISDMISEHC, and via co-chair Lyndal Trevena’s blog at the BMJ:
February 27 is the deadline to submit your abstract to the fourth ISEHC conference, taking place July 19-22, 2015 in Sydney, Australia. This year, the conference will be a joint conference with the International Shared Decision Making group, bringing evidence-based practice and shared decision-making together. The two fields are closely related and have much to contribute to each other and to better care with patients. This year’s conference promises to be as much a success as the previous ones, with prominent keynote speakers such as Victor Montori, Alexandra Barratt and Sharon Strauss. Come and join like-minded colleagues, make your own contribution, and enjoy the many pleasures of Sydney!
We look forward to seeing you there. Go to www.isdm-isehc2015.org for more info.
Welcome to the website of the newly constituted International Society for Evidence-Based Health Care (ISEHC). The Society was prodded into existence by Kameshwar Prasad who sensed that many EBM enthusiasts around the world felt isolated and wanted more and better communication with others working to apply the principles of EBM at the bedside or in the clinic. The Society exists to foster and promote EBHC globally.
